Day 7: Aumont-Aubrac to Montgros

~15 miles, across the Aubrac Plateau, rolling hills and very little shade

Wow, wow, wow! What an absolutely stunning place this is! I think it took us two hours longer that anticipated because we stopped to take so many photos (that of course do no justice to this place). The area is a high plateau dotted with cows and endless wildflowers. The sky goes on forever and the only sounds are crickets, the blowing wind, and your feet walking on the trail beneath you. It’s peaceful and restorative.

And I’m also exhausted. Today was our longest day yet, about 15 miles. And pretty much all in the direct sun. There was a stiff breeze which made it feel less hot, but I am definitely crispy. Tomorrow will be more of the same, with temperatures moving even higher. I just hope the wind continues. Last night it rained and we heard some thunder in the distance, but this morning there is not a cloud in the sky.

About 5 kilometers before our destination, and when I was not sure I could make it, we came across a little snack and beverage cart! It’s saved the day! And the owners were so sweet and helpful. If you find yourself walking here, I encourage you to have a quick stop and a refreshment at “Tatie Biscuits.” As is so often the case in France, you can never count on anything to be open, so finding this cart was a nice change from disappointment after disappointment, wishing for a cold beverage and some shade.
