Day 3: Monistrol-d’Allier to Saugues

~10 miles (big uphill and then rolling hills)

Today was challenging, although not as difficult as yesterday. The route went up the mountain instead of down, but the path was wider and not quite as vertical as the day before. Shortly after leaving Monistrol-d’Allier we came across a small chapel dedicated to Mary Magdalene built within an ancient natural stone grotto. There were volunteers onsite to share information about the chapel as well as a sea themed art installation around the chapel.

One of my favorite parts of walking right now has been the endless wildflowers along the path. So many bursts of color everywhere we look.

We arrived in Saugues mid-afternoon, welcomed by the wood carved sculptures on the edge of town. The town has a storied history that includes a folk legend of a mythical and deadly beast that took the lives of over 60 people in the 18th century. There are references and imagery all over the region.

For the evening we stayed at one of our favorite places we have been so far, a small Chambres d’Hôtes (B&B) called La Flore. The hosts were so lovely and kind and made the most delicious meal! We were in the company of all French people and I did my best to understand and translate for August. My favorite part was the cheese course, which I have been excited about for months before coming here. It was everything I had imagined and more!
